Victor Willis, the original lead singer and co-founder of Village People, has died at age 74. The group confirmed his passing on June 30, just one day prior to his 75th birthday, citing a short but aggressive illness.
Formed in the late '70s alongside producer Jacques Morali, the ensemble bridged New York’s queer underground archetypes with mainstream pop success. Willis provided the powerhouse vocals for genre-defining anthems including 'Macho Man,' 'In The Navy,' and the multi-platinum 'Y.M.C.A.'
His departure in 1980 marked the end of an era for the group’s most commercially potent lineup. Beyond the costumes and choreography, Willis’s technical vocal ability remained the anchor for a discography that was eventually inducted into the GRAMMY Hall of Fame.
