Refuge NYC Announces First Anniversary Season With Deep Dish, The Martinez Brothers & More

No VIP sections. No bottle service. Just a dancefloor built around the music. One year after opening between East Williamsburg and Bushwick, Refuge NYC is celebrating its first anniversary with an entire month of programming that brings some serious names from house, techno and underground electronic music to its 500-capacity room. Throughout September, the Brooklyn club will welcome Deep Dish, The Martinez Brothers, David Morales, Chris Liebing, Natasha Diggs, Rodriguez Jr., Gabriel & Dresden, Two Shell, Ahadadream, Victor Calderone and more. But the lineup only tells half the story. In a city where nightlife can increasingly revolve around tables, exclusivity and spectacle, Refuge has spent its first year building something deliberately different. Putting the Dancefloor Back at the Centre Refuge's approach is remarkably straightforward: the music comes first. The club operates without VIP areas or bottle service, instead putting its focus into programming, sound and the dancefloor itself. At the centre of the room is its custom-built REX analogue sound system, designed by sound engineer Craig "Shorty" Bernabeu. And it hasn't remained static since opening. Over the past year, the team has continued refining the system with bespoke analogue EQs, vintage JBL tweeters and ongoing acoustic adjustments. Even the DJ booth monitoring has been redesigned, while the wooden dancefloor is regularly maintained with dancers specifically in mind. It's the kind of obsessive attention to details most people in the room might never consciously notice, but collectively define how a club actually feels. That philosophy appears to be working. In just 12 months, the intimate 500-capacity venue has developed its reputation largely through word of mouth, positioning itself as an alternative to New York's more conventional nightlife model. September Is Basically One Long Birthday Party Refuge isn't marking its first year with a single anniversary night. It's taking over the entire month. The programme begins on September 5 with Gabriel & Dresden, followed that night by New York house institution David Morales, who takes control for a marathon 12-hour set. Natasha Diggs follows on September 6, while the weeks ahead bring Gorje Hewek, Volen Sentir, Rodriguez Jr. Live, The Martinez Brothers, Two Shell, Chris Liebing, Akua, Black Asteroid, Ahadadream, Coffintexts and more. Then comes the anniversary weekend itself. Deep Dish Go Open-to-Close On September 25, Deep Dish take over Refuge for an exclusive open-to-close performance. For a club that has made long-form musical storytelling part of its identity, giving the duo the room for the entire night feels particularly fitting. The celebrations continue September 26 with John Dimatteo, Shorty and special guests before moving into sunrise with Refuge resident Victor Calderone on September 27. That night, Brothers Macklovitch, the project bringing together A-Trak and Dave 1, closes out the anniversary weekend. A Different Vision for New York Nightlife Refuge's first anniversary arrives at an interesting moment for club culture. As nightlife becomes increasingly polished, premium and driven by spectacle, there's still a growing audience looking for the opposite: smaller rooms, serious sound systems, longer sets and fewer distractions between the DJ and dancefloor. Refuge has spent its first year betting on exactly that.
