Alfie Jones brings the gritty optimism of New York’s electronic underground to the stage with ‘The Late Utopians’ this August.
Electronic music culture is moving from the warehouse to the stage. ‘The Late Utopians,’ a new play written and directed by Alfie Jones, explores New York City’s underground through the eyes of a journalist searching for purpose within the city’s nightlife.
Produced by COGGIA, the narrative frames the rave as a site of political and personal reclamation. It follows protagonist Emma as she navigates the friction between a fractured American landscape and the temporary sanctuary found on the dancefloor.
The production runs from August 5th through August 30th at Iron Belly, Underbelly Cowgate. It marks a continued interest in the intersection of club history and performance, following similar thematic works at the Fringe in recent years.
While rave-focused media often leans on caricature, Jones’ work aims to capture the specific pull of a community built on a vision of a different future. Tickets are available via the Edinburgh Fringe box office.
