Some pieces of club history were never meant to leave the building. In 1991, when Ministry of Sound first opened its doors in London, the club commissioned Alpha Industries to produce MA-1 bomber jackets for its doormen. Featuring the original Ministry of Sound logo designed by artist Chemical X, the jackets became an unmistakable part of the club’s early identity.
They were never commercially available. Owning one meant you were part of the operation, making the jackets an unlikely symbol of exclusivity within London’s emerging dance music culture.
Now, 35 years later, Ministry of Sound, Alpha Industries and Chemical X have reunited to bring the original concept back, releasing just 35 individually signed and numbered bomber jackets.
Launching exclusively at Dover Street Market London during Frieze Week, the limited-edition pieces revisit the original MA-1 silhouette with bespoke embroidery by Chemical X, drawing inspiration from the evolution of the club’s visual identity.
For a venue that helped shape the relationship between underground dance music, fashion and nightlife, the collaboration feels particularly fitting. Long before club culture became a recurring reference point for luxury fashion houses, the clothes worn inside London’s nightclubs were already developing their own visual language.
The original Ministry of Sound jackets were never designed as merchandise. They were functional uniforms that gradually became cultural artifacts, associated with the people who helped build one of electronic music’s most influential institutions.
“Art doesn’t have to be something you hang on a wall; it can be something you wear,” Chemical X said of the new collaboration.
The release also forms part of Ministry of Sound’s 35th-anniversary celebrations, which have included a major renovation of the club’s legendary main room and an international anniversary tour.
35 Years of Ministry of Sound, Documented
Alongside the jackets, Ministry of Sound is releasing Ministry of Sound: Anthology, a 416-page hardcover book by Grammy-nominated creative director Simon Moore, published by Rizzoli New York.
Arriving on October 20, 2026, the book documents the club’s first 35 years through previously unpublished photography, archival memorabilia and first-hand accounts from the people who shaped its history.
Contributors include Paul Oakenfold, David Morales, Moby, Pete Tong and Honey Dijon, alongside founders, residents, designers, staff and clubbers who experienced the venue across different generations.
The publication explores Ministry of Sound’s journey from its early 1990s origins to its wider influence on global electronic music culture.
Moore has also developed a complementary T-shirt collection using graphics sourced from the club’s archives. Designs reference an early business card bearing Ministry’s original working title, a mid-1990s Japan tour flyer and the operating manual for the Urei rotary mixer installed when the club first opened.
The archival material comes from the personal collections of founder Justin Berkmann and former resident DJ CJ Mackintosh.
Together, the jackets, book and accompanying apparel offer a look at how a nightclub’s visual identity can become just as culturally significant as the music played inside it.
And with only 35 bomber jackets being produced, the original spirit of exclusivity remains intact.
The Ministry of Sound x Alpha Industries x Chemical X bomber jacket is priced at £275 and available exclusively at Dover Street Market London.
Ministry of Sound: Anthology will be published by Rizzoli New York on October 20, priced at £55.
