Teije van Vlie, the Dutch producer and North Quarter founder who redefined soulful drum & bass, has died following a three-year battle with cancer.
Teije van Vlie, known globally as Lenzman, has passed away. His family confirmed the news this weekend, noting that he fought the disease with the same quiet strength that characterized his career. A centerpiece of the Metalheadz family and a visionary in his own right, Lenzman’s influence reached far beyond the DJ booth.
He was the definitive architect of soulful drum & bass. By weaving jazz and hip-hop sensibilities into the liquid framework, he moved the genre away from the dancefloor's technical arms race and toward something more human. His 2014 debut 'Looking At The Stars' remains a masterclass in atmospheric songwriting.
In 2016, van Vlie founded The North Quarter. The label became a vital ecosystem for progressive D&B, prioritizing character and musicality over commercial metrics. Even during his illness, his output remained consistent, including recent work with Fox, Satl, and Redeyes that maintained his high standards of craft.
