Britain's oldest functioning nightclub, 'The Mighty Acca,' has launched a campaign to secure a historic blue plaque and formalize its status as a cornerstone of UK dance culture.
Halifax’s Acapulco has operated since 1961, predating the moon landing and color television. Now entering its 65th year, the venue is campaigning for a Halifax Civic Trust Blue Plaque to cement its position as a living piece of social history.
Owner Simon Jackson is crowdsourcing the £650 required for the installation via GoFundMe. The venue has a history of unconventional fundraising; in 2022, it famously sold off pieces of its own sticky carpet to support local causes.
All funds raised beyond the plaque's cost will be donated to Halifax Street Angels, a volunteer group focused on nightlife safety. It is a pragmatic end for a venue that has served as a cross-generational rite of passage for six decades.
